This week I will be taking a look at two indicators as set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) regarding National Education Standards for Teacher (NETS-T). For each one I will create a GAME plan. The four steps of the GAME plan include setting a Goal, Action, Monitoring, and Evaluation. The GAME plan is "recommendations for self-directed learning" (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009, p 3). Cennamo states that GAME fosters "understanding of content" and "creates authentic leaning" (Laureate Education, 2009). Technology can be used to support the GAME plan.
NETS Standard 4a: advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
Goal 1: Students will learn how to properly cite electronic resources in APA format.
Action: When dealing with electronic resources, I will teach students how to use APA format to cite sources. This will be done by getting a class set of APA guidelines and having students follow the format. We will practice in the computer lab and use this skill during an established class activity, the Article Analysis.
Monitoring: I will keep a watchful eye during practice in the computer lab and make notes to students about when and how to cite sources.
Evaluation: Each student will be evaluated each week on their Article Analysis and a test will follow during week two of the exercise.
NETS Standard 3c: communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats
Goal: Make parents aware of projects and relevant classwork their sons and daughters will be engaging in with a weekly podcast.
Action: I will create a weekly podcast to inform parents and students of classroom activities.
Monitoring: Each Friday I will determine if I have created the podcast and be sure that information included in the podcast is relavant to the parent and teacher.
Evaluation: I will gather feedback from parents who listen to the podcast at the end of the year to determine if the podcast was done each week and determine if the podcast was helpful.

Teaching students how to correctly site electronic resources is an extremely important tool for them to learn. I belive this lesson is a great idea for you to incorperate into your class and will benefit your students for the rest of their lives.
ReplyDeleteRob,
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that you want to focus on proper citation. The internet is an awesome tool for students to use but also makes it very easy to copy and paste information. Students need direct instruction in how to properly cite sources and why it is so important. A teacher in a previous course exposed me to bibme.org. I have found this site to be very helpful in creating referece pages, especially for websites. It will allow you to cite work in APA or several other formats. Another website that may be valuable to you is Teaching Copyright at http://www.teachingcopyright.org/curriculum/hs. I learned about this site in our last course and I am interested in using it with my students.
Technology is a great way to keep parents informed about what is going on in class. This is a similar goal that I have. I think that I will try to use a blogging site for this. Podcast is also a great route to go.

Rob,
ReplyDeleteIt is great that you are concerned with keeping your students' parents informed about their child's progress within your class. I also think that the way you are going about it is awesome. Keeping parents informed using new technology will provide you with an opportunity to introduce and connect them with some of the same technologies their children are engaged in using (whether they know it or not). All too often I hear parents say that they have no idea what it is that their child does while on a computer. Parents might feel more inclined to learn what their child is doing especially when their child's teacher introduces them to 21st century technology. They might actually find that their children are engaged in using this technology in a positive, creative, and construction way. I wish you luck on your GAME journey!
I agree, it is important to teach students how to properly cite their sources. Perhaps you can also show them some of the wonderful electronic helpers out there for these things such as Son of Citation Maching, or Bibme.org on the web, or through the function on Microsoft Word. I can certainly say that I have used all of these at least once throughout my coursework. This would be a great way to incorporate technology into the standard.
ReplyDeleteRob,
ReplyDeleteI think it’s great that one of your goals is to integrate a weekly podcast into your classroom. This is something that I have explored a little with, but have not had the chance to include in my classroom yet. One of the challenges I anticipate with trying to integrate this technology is the lack of microphones/audio-recording devices. I am currently working with my school technology specialist to try to get a grant for more microphones to be purchased. Good luck with the podcast.
Wow Everyone! Thanks for all of the feedback! I appreciate all of the resources you all shared and the encouragement too!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe the overall theme of this lesson is getting better as a teacher. We all strive to do this everday. I believe our generation is lucky because we have all of this technology and when applied correctly, it will benefit our students.
Thanks again...check back soon!

Our generation is definitely lucky to have the technology that we do. My first computer was a Commodore 64 and WOW, did we come a long way!
ReplyDeleteRob,
ReplyDeleteGreat GAME Plan! You've also had many helpful comments from your readers, I hope you find mine as helpful. In the past I have used http://www.noodletools.com/ to create citations. There is a fee for this site but is very user friendly and schools can pay a site fee so that the entire school can use the site. I love the idea of a pod cast, it creates a personal touch. Will you be using Audacity or GCast to create your cast?
