Revising my GAME plan

Over the past month, I have been exploring how to best teach my students how to cite electronic sources. I developed a GAME plan designed by Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer (2009). The GAME plan asks us to set Goals, take Action, Monitor Progress, and Evaluate success (Cennamo, et al 2009, p. 3). Each week I have reflected about my experience in each of the steps. I have found this to be a rewarding experience. The reflection has been a good tool for me to think about how to best serve my students and make the process efficient for myself.

I have learned about many resources that I can use to help my students cite electronic sources. The suggestions from my peers have been most helpful. They referred me to website such as www.bibme.org and www.citationmachine.net. These resources will be used in my classes.

I am still working toward my goal of helping my students cite electronic sources. I have a lot to learn in regards to citation myself. Suggestions from my professor in this course, Theresa Pepe, have helped my hone my own APA citation skills.

At this time, I am not ready to set new goals at this time. I am ready to continue learning about citation and I am in the process of looking for a seminar or class that will help me in this regard.

In the future I plan to use the GAME plan occasionally to help me think about my own learning. Setting goals and developing a plan to reach those goals is a healthy process. Taking the time to write down and follow through a GAME plan will help me stay on task.

Thank everyone for their assistance in this process. Both Theresa and my peers have helped me become a better teacher.

  1. I agree with you that it may too soon to set new goals at this time, but I am glad to read that you are continuing to pursue the goals that you have already created. Can you use the GAME plan template to let your students create and pursue goals as well?

  2. Rob,
I am glad to hear that your reflections are helping you to determine how to be the most effective for your students. Teachers stay so busy that they do not have much time for reflection. I believe reflection can really help all teachers to adjust their lessons to become more and more beneficial to them and their students.

Here is another resource that I found that gives information about siting online sources in APA and MLA formats.

I am glad to hear your research and planning is going well. I think this is a very important topic for students to learn.

  3. Rob,

I definitely agree that the notion of creating a personal GAME plan has been very helpful. While I always give myself at least two major goals to accomplish throughout each school year, the GAME plan process is very specific as to what you must do in order to effectively achieve your goals. I have explored a little with the bibme website, and was thinking about having my fourth grade students try this website out during their Black History Month projects. Best of luck with the rest of your GAME plan.

  4. Everyone,

Thanks for the comments. As I stated in my original post, the GAME plan can help us accomplish our goals. We can introduce this process to our students. It will assist them in achieving their goals as well. The process is the important thing about the GAME plan. Follow the process and the result will be better than if no thought is put into the process.

  5. Rob,
Great work! You write concise to the point posts. Learning to cite information appropriately is an important goal for today's students, if we as teachers are indeed teaching them to become contributors of a global community of learners. keep up the good work!
